As you will see in our previous blog post <link to history of ice cream here> one of the earliest recipes released in this country contain flavourings such as; cherries, raspberries and other fruits.
Even earlier than that, during the 4th century BC, Nero, the roman emperor at the time, had his frozen deserts with flavours such as; honey, nuts and various fruits.
Meanwhile, over in Europe, when perfecting the art of ice cream making, they were experimenting with different fruits, as well as things like grated cheese, asparagus and duck liver.
Whilst there is know definitive answer, it seems that wherever you find ice cream, you will find that there were usually different types of fruits involved. There’s no mention of any type of vanilla extract or flavouring being used until much later in the 19th century.
